A new café opened in Wylde Green. Sweetfields Café and Bakery now occupies a former bookmaker’s. It sits on the border of Erdington and Sutton Coldfield. The location is on Sutton Road at the corner of Douay Road.

Robert Chalaczkiewicz co-owns and bakes there. He is from Poland and bakes all items on-site. Expect cakes, pastries, bread, and savouries. Robert worked in Australia and Bali before opening Sweetfields.

He ran his own restaurant in Bali. His sister Paula lives in Sutton Coldfield, where Robert started his new venture. Sweetfields is opposite The Yenton pub, and he begins baking at 4 a.m.

Robert likes baking Italian and French foods. He lived in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth working for hotels or a mining company. He also owned a bakery and restaurant in Bali.

According to Robert, Bali became too crowded. Covid began as his sister lived in Sutton, so he moved there. He acknowledges that kitchen work is hard, but Robert has passion and experience.

Robert likes creating and feeding people. He is 59 but feels like 35. Sweetfields just opened and promises customers a surprise. Robert’s partner is Izabela Okonsk.

Izabela says Robert had the main idea, and everything they sell is fresh. They bake everything in the shop, aiming for food that is original and hearty. They lack a set menu.

She explains that they surprise customers daily with Robert baking everything himself. He wakes up very early and starts baking at the shop from 4 a.m.

Izabela says he bakes with love and spreads good energy when baking. His passion affects everything he makes.

Robert says each visit brings a new surprise, which he finds very nice. He enjoys people’s reactions and believes it’s a great area, noting the neighborhood is very good.

Robert is still seeking suppliers and hopes to find organic farm milk. Sweetfields is a deli, café, and bakery. They will make their own cider vinegar and plan to have jams and yoghurt.

Sweetfields promises also unique coffee. They sell Molinari coffee from Italy, which Robert previously sold in Indonesia. It is rare in Birmingham, with only one other place selling it now.

Robert loves this full-bodied coffee, finding it strong and aromatic. They also sell Eaton and Bird coffee with vanilla and chocolate flavor. Sweetfields is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
