Derry’s recent violence has sparked backlash over security removal at Ebrington Square, raising community safety concerns.
The PSNI is looking into claims of an “arranged fight” that happened at this former military base, now a lively spot with businesses and a hotel. Local MLA Sinead McLaughlin is not happy about the security removal. She thinks it’s a bad move, especially with the recent violence being labeled as sectarian.
McLaughlin pointed out that Ebrington has a complicated past but is now a place of pride. It’s got cultural and economic potential, and businesses like Alchemy and EY NI have set up shop there. She’s concerned about the safety of young people and the community feeling intimidated.
She also questioned why the Executive Office would swap out security for just CCTV cameras. She believes strong security is essential to keep the area safe. McLaughlin is determined to push for a reversal of this decision to prevent anti-social behavior.
The police responded to reports of a large gathering of youths in the area, but by the time they arrived, the crowd had dispersed. Inspector Spence mentioned they’re working with local leaders to understand what’s going on and to keep the community safe.
He urged anyone involved in anti-social behavior to think about the consequences. Getting a criminal record can really mess up future job and travel opportunities. If anyone has more info, they should reach out to the police.
The Executive Office, responsible for Ebrington’s development, hasn’t commented yet.
