A retired teacher raised over £2,000 for Air Ambulance NI in memory of Kyra McKinley, a former pupil tragically killed in a 2018 car accident.
Kyra McKinley was 21. The crash happened in County Tyrone in 2018. She passed away in the hospital two days after the accident. The collision involved two vehicles and took place on Deverney Road, Omagh.
Kyra was severely hurt, and an Air Ambulance flew her to the Royal Victoria Hospital. She had emergency surgery and was put on life support. She died soon after in intensive care, surrounded by her family.
Joan Clements, 61, taught Kyra. Joan did a fundraising walk in January for Air Ambulance NI. Kyra’s family and friends also raised money in her memory.
Joan walked 10,000 steps each day. The challenge was to help fund the helicopters that provide lifesaving aid across Northern Ireland and keep them flying.
Joan lives near a busy farm road and understands the need for quick medical help, because every minute counts after an accident. Kyra’s accident affected Joan deeply, and she hoped to save lives through her effort.
Joan remembers Kyra as a lovely girl with many skills and a positive attitude. Her death greatly impacted Joan. Kyra was close in age to Joan’s daughters, and it was a very sad event in her life.
Joan exceeded her initial goal of £1,000 and raised over £2,000. Friends helped her complete the month-long walk and she walked over 17,000 steps in total.
Joan chose walking for safety, because other options were abseiling or parachuting. Joan enjoyed her walks, and friends and family often walked with her. The weather was surprisingly good. She thanks everyone who donated, hoping her actions will help to save a life.
The money raised matters to Joan, and every contribution helps a lot.
