A North Belfast group explains how a community fund helped them revamp their building into a lively hub for locals and support those affected by The Troubles
North Belfast: A community group called Survivors of Trauma is buzzing with excitement. They recently turned their old church building into a lively hub. Thanks to a National Lottery grant, they fixed their roof and added solar panels.
This place is more than just a building. It’s a safe space for those affected by The Troubles. The repairs have made it cozy and welcoming. Now, they can host more community events and support groups.
Gary Teer from the group shared how crucial the funding was. Before the repairs, they had leaks and mold. It was freezing inside, and many rooms were unusable. Now, they’ve got proper insulation and a warm environment.
The solar panels are a game changer. They save money on energy bills and even send some energy back to the grid. This brings in about £1,000 a year, which they reinvest into the building. It’s all about making small changes for a big impact.
Gary encourages other groups to apply for funding. He knows it can feel daunting, but there’s support available. The Sustainable Community Buildings programme offers grants to help organizations improve their venues.
Kate Beggs from the National Lottery Community Fund believes this initiative is a great start for many groups. It’s all about helping them become more sustainable and aware of their environmental impact.
Applications for the fund open on January 8, 2025. If you’re part of a community group in the area, this could be your chance to make a difference!
