Aberdeen is introducing 20mph speed limits on certain roads to boost safety for everyone, especially pedestrians. It’s a big step for the city!
Aberdeen: Councillors are making a move to improve road safety. They’ve agreed to introduce 20mph speed limits in the northern suburbs. This decision came during a meeting on January 21.
The plan follows a report about the Scottish Government’s road safety goals. They want Scotland to have the best road safety by 2030. Right now, there are already 1,203 roads with 20mph limits in Aberdeen.
They’re looking to add another 1,474 streets, bringing the total to 2,677. The government aims to ensure safer speeds in built-up areas by 2025. It’s all about keeping everyone safe, especially pedestrians.
Council Co-Leader Ian Yuill emphasized that lower speeds will help protect vulnerable people on the streets. He believes this change will lead to fewer serious injuries.
Committee Vice Convener Miranda Radley also supports the initiative. She pointed out that a pedestrian hit at 30 mph is much more likely to suffer fatal injuries than at 20 mph. It’s a smart move for the city!
