Dublin: A soldier from the Irish Defence Forces has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Kielan Mooney, 30, was convicted of raping a fellow soldier at a hotel in Dublin back in July 2021.

The woman, now 24, was out with friends when she met Mooney. They went back to her friend’s hotel room, where the assault occurred. Mooney was found guilty of multiple charges, including anal and oral rape.

During the trial, the judge noted that Mooney showed no remorse for his actions. He described Mooney’s behavior as selfish and arrogant. The judge emphasized that the woman had the right to decide what she wanted in that situation.

Mooney’s defense argued that he was a good father and a dedicated family man. However, two women, who have children with him, contradicted this, saying he had little contact with his kids.

The judge also pointed out that Mooney’s claims about being a good father were misleading. He imposed a sentence of eight and a half years, along with two years of post-release supervision.

The woman shared her victim impact statement, expressing how the incident changed her life. She struggled with her mental health and felt her future was shattered.

Despite the trauma, she has been working on healing through therapy and support from friends and family. The judge acknowledged her strength and hoped she could move forward positively.
