Bernie started the Short Strand Community Centre 35 years ago. She wanted to create a place where everyone could find support and resources. Her hard work has improved many lives in the area.
The community center is a vital hub in East Belfast. It offers essential services and empowers those in need. Bernie has also played a key role in EastSide Partnership and East Belfast Sure Start, bringing people together for community growth.
She has even organized events with notable figures like President Bill Clinton and King Charles. This shows her commitment to representing the community on big stages.
Jonathan McAlpin, chair of the Eastside Awards committee, expressed pride in presenting the award to Bernie. He praised her as a beacon of hope and a lasting legacy for future generations.
This year’s Eastside Awards were a huge success, with the ballroom at Hastings Stormont Hotel filled to capacity. Michelle Hatfield from Belfast City Airport, the main sponsor, celebrated the outstanding individuals and groups that make East Belfast a great place to live.
With over 20,000 public votes this year, the awards have gained significant momentum. The event showcased the incredible talent and dedication in the community.
