Belfast: Demolition is kicking off at a popular bar. Filthy McNasty’s has been a nightlife favorite for years. It closed its doors on New Year’s Eve. Now, it’s making way for over 200 student apartments.

Workmen are busy tearing down the bar and its sister venue, Liquor XXX. This change comes after the Belfast City Council approved plans for new student housing. The site is located on Dublin Road and Ventry Street.

The developer, FMN Properties Limited, also wants to build a new pub on Ventry Street. Before Filthy McNasty’s opened in 2009, the spot was known as Dempseys. It had to shut down in 2007 due to a fire.

More student housing is on the way in the area. Queen’s University is also planning a new accommodation building at the old Movie House cinema site. There’s already more student housing at Bradbury Place.
