Macduff: Calls are growing to keep Macduff Library open. People want to save nearly £100,000 worth of recent improvements from being wasted.

Concerns have also been raised about Aberdeenshire Council possibly facing legal action. This is due to plans to close 13 libraries across the region to save money.

Residents were shocked when they learned that libraries in Macduff, Cairnbulg, and Rosehearty might close. They were expected to shut down by the end of December, but that hasn’t happened yet.

After pushback from the community, Aberdeenshire Council agreed to hold public meetings. They want to discuss how library services can continue in the future.

At a recent meeting in Macduff, many residents showed up to voice their concerns. However, officials noted that the library’s high running costs and limited hours put it at risk.

A group of twelve residents has formed a “Friends of Macduff Library” group. They are interested in taking over the library through a community asset transfer.

The future of the 13 libraries will be discussed at the next communities committee meeting. There are worries that the council is rushing the closures without considering library users.

Councillor Glen Reynolds believes the public consultation process has not been adequate. He fears the council could face a judicial review, similar to a situation in Aberdeen two years ago.

The local authority managed to avoid legal action after admitting their consultation could have been better. Reynolds is concerned that decisions about the libraries will be made too quickly.

He stated that it would be irresponsible to close the library based on the current information. Each library should be evaluated individually, considering community input.

Councillor Ross Cassie emphasized the importance of community groups that use Macduff Library. He questioned the decision to close it after spending nearly £100,000 on improvements.

The committee ultimately recommended keeping all three libraries open. They believe more information is needed before any closures can be justified. They also want to ensure alternative services are in place first.
