Belfast City Council has approved a 5.99% rates increase for the 2025/26 budget, impacting various property types. The council aims to balance community support and service maintenance.
The council announced this increase for the 2025/26 budget. They say it will affect different property types. For example, a terraced home will see an average weekly rise of £0.40. A three-bedroom terraced property will increase by £0.62, while a four-bedroom detached home will go up by £1.37.
Apartments will rise by £0.39, and office properties will see a £10.39 increase. Retail properties will increase by £8.51.
Councillors mentioned that they can review the rate until February 15. This is in case the NI Executive provides funds to help with National Insurance increases.
Councillor Ryan Murphy, who leads the council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, said they worked hard to keep the rise low. He noted that the increase reflects the national insurance changes from the UK Government.
He also mentioned that inflation and pay pressures have affected the council. However, they have made significant savings to manage these costs.
Murphy believes they are balancing support for communities and maintaining key services. He highlighted that the decision allows continued investment in parks, leisure centers, and sports pitches.
Additionally, they plan to expand the glass recycling service to more households. The council is committed to improving efficiency and sustainability in their services.
