Castledawson: A community is heartbroken after a schoolgirl drowned in the Moyola River. Emergency services were called early Sunday morning when someone reported a girl in the water.

Rescue teams found her just outside the village. Sadly, she later died in the hospital. Local councillor Denise Johnston shared that the alarm was raised around 5:20 AM.

She mentioned that the girl was in the water for over an hour before being rescued. The Lough Neagh rescue crew worked hard to save her, performing CPR until the ambulance arrived.

Denise expressed how devastating this is for the family, describing the girl as their only daughter. The community is in shock and mourning together.

The PSNI confirmed they responded to the incident and that the death is not being treated as suspicious. This tragedy has left a deep impact on everyone in the area.
