Portsoy: Aspire Restaurant is set to expand its kitchen and add more seating. This comes after the restaurant’s huge success since opening in 2022.

The restaurant is located in a renovated mid-19th Century church. It had been empty for years before the renovation brought it back to life.

Work had already started on the expansion, but it was done without permission. The local council raised concerns about removing a mature tree near the building.

Council planners initially recommended denying the expansion. They felt it didn’t fit the local development plan and could harm the area’s character.

During a recent meeting, project agent Michael Ritchie explained the need for the kitchen extension. He mentioned that the restaurant’s popularity has grown, and staff need more space.

Ritchie also noted that the new covered seating would protect diners from seagulls during summer. He argued that the tree was too close to the building and in poor condition.

David Urquhart, representing his daughter who owns the restaurant, emphasized the need for more kitchen space. He mentioned that Aspire has attracted many loyal customers and international visitors.

Urquhart pointed out that the tree had become overgrown and was damaging the building’s brickwork and stained glass. It had been out of control for at least 15 years.

Councillor John Cox supported the expansion, stating that Aspire was a victim of its own success. He felt it was unfortunate that the focus was on one tree, which shouldn’t hold back the business.

Councillor Glen Reynolds also welcomed the upgrades, noting they would help the booming business grow. He highlighted the importance of attracting tourists, especially during local events.

The committee ultimately approved the expansion unanimously, allowing Aspire to continue its success in Portsoy.
