Children in Need Day

Dear Parents / Carers,

On Friday 13th November 2020, Buckland St. Mary C of E Primary School will be hosting a 'wear something spotty' day to help raise money for Children in Need.

As you know, Children in Need support charities and projects across the UK who help remove the barriers some children and young people face in order to help them thrive. The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on children's mental health and wellbeing has been huge and we can all play a part in supporting services to provide a better quality of life for children in need.

Please help us support this important cause by providing a small donation next Friday 13th November. Your child/children can wear spots for the day!

Welcome to the final newsletter of 2020. The staff and children have achieved so much this term despite the challenges we have faced.  As you approach Buckland School, you’re presented by a beautiful display of fairy lights around the perimeter of the school (well almost the perimeter!). It really does lift your spirits on these long, dark days! My thanks to the parents who supported and organised for these gorgeous Christmas lights. To get us in the festive spirit, the children have made Christingles, Ash have performed a nativity and our Discovery project has involved making high quality Christmas decorations. The children and staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure we’re enhancing the curriculum and that we’re working inline with our foundation subject’s ‘Statement of Intent’ (available on our website). The children of Beech Class have made some fantastic decorations this term and have applied their DT skills from last year. They have learnt about electricity and circuits, combining their skills to create a wonderful Christmas decoration. Oak Class have been budding scientists and Miss Auton has inspired them with her knowledge and expertise of plants and living things. They have also applied their DT skills when sewing their delightful Christmas decorations. Ash Class are now fully settled into school life thanks to Mrs Rundle, Miss Sullivan, Mrs Blatcher and Miss North. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly young children adapt to school life and thrive. You may recall from Autumn 1, our Discovery project was based on ‘our village’. We’re planning to take several clay sculptures, tiles and creations to Holyrood School to be fired as soon as it is safe to do so. Once completed, they will form a collective piece of artwork and a large installation of Buckland St. Mary (not to scale!). We will of course update you as soon as this is complete.  The other week, I met with a School Effectiveness Advisor from the Diocese of Bath and Wells. She was delighted to hear how our Christian vision has supported and guided us over the past months. The staff and children have shown such resilience, determination and courage. Team Buckland must once again, be very proud of what they have achieved.  My thanks to you as parents/carers for your continued support of the school. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.   Categories: 1 CategorySchool News

What a busy week! My thanks to those of you who joined the teachers for parents evening. I appreciate these were a little different to normal but no doubt you managed to gain a good insight into your child’s education and how you can support at home. I've already received some positive comments which is lovely to hear. Since our last newsletter, the children have been working on their new Discovery project and are focusing on Design and Technology and Science. Based on the successes and impressive outcomes from last term's Discovery project in Art, I’m sure the standard of work will be just as strong if not better. The children have made a large clay installation of Buckland St. Mary. Every child has contributed and applied a range of skills to produce some fantastic outcomes. Once we're safely able to do so, we will take the creations to be fired and assemble the final installation! Watch this space! Please take time to look at some of the latest developments on our website. Under the ‘About Us/Curriculum’ section, you will find our Curriculum Statement of Intent as well as further detail of how and what we are teaching at school. Some of these sections are still under development but please enjoy learning more about the work we are doing to enhance the full curriculum we offer the children. Finally, my thanks to those parents who've sent messages of support to me and the team. I cannot emphasise how hard every member of staff is working in these exceptionally challenging times. Despite the obviously difficult situation, your child's/children's safety, wellbeing and learning remains at the heart of everything we do.Categories: 1 CategorySchool News

The start of 2020 - 2021 at Buckland St. Mary C of E Primary School has been an incredibly successful one thanks to the unwavering support from every member of staff. Mrs K Henning and Mr A Kalopsideotis have not only settled brilliantly but are having a direct impact on the children’s progress thanks to their commitment and dedication to the children. Mr Kalopsideotis supported Beech Class with elevation drawings last week - we were blown away by the outcomes! Modern Foreign Language is evident in every class thanks to Mrs Hennings hard work and determination. Miss Katie Sulivan has seamlessly become part of the team and has ensured the children in EYFS have had such a positive start to their school career. Despite the obvious setbacks from last year, our revised approach to the national curriculum has taken off with pace. The teachers should feel very proud of what they’ve achieved in such a short time. We have a robust, experience based curriculum which every child who attends Buckland School benefits from. Miss Rogers (DCEO) and Mr Handscomb (Director of Teaching and Learning) were impressed with what they saw when they visited Buckland School last Wednesday. Well done to all the staff and of course the children - Buckland is going from strength to strength!  Forest School sessions have been superb. The team from ROAM have been working with the children each week and the smell of fire and toasted marshmallows is now a familiar one. Premier Sports continues to provide high quality PE provision for every child. Our Christian Vision is almost tangible across the school and is permeating everything we do. My thanks to the teachers, to Mrs Cann and all members of the team who continue to work tirelessly ensuring the very best for every child.  Finally, my thanks to Mr Heath-Coleman (Estates and Contract Manager) for securing the bid for and organising the installation of the new roof at Buckland School, I’m sure you’ll agree it looks fantastic!  Wishing you all an enjoyable half term.   Categories: 1 CategorySchool News
Parents' Evening Information Posted on: 23/10/2020

Parents' Evening Information

Dear parents/carers,    Due to Coronavirus restrictions, we will hold the forthcoming Parents’ Evening via Zoom. We would like to encourage everyone to book an appointment with their child’s/children’s teacher so that we have a chance to discuss how your child is progressing in school and how we can work together to do the very best for them. If it is difficult for you to join via Zoom for any reason, contact the school office for the attention of your child’s class teacher.    These meetings are a vital part of your child’s education and contribute towards their happiness at school and their progress in education. If you would also like to speak with Mr Nation (Executive Head of School) and/or Miss Counter (SENDCo), please contact the school office.    In keeping with our Risk Assessments and Home School Agreement, all sessions will be recorded and we ask you to ensure that if you choose to have your camera on, that the environment is suitable and non-offensive.    Below is a link to a Google Form. Please follow the corresponding link for your child’s class and complete the form. You must enter your child’s full name and choose 3 preferred time slots. We will do our best to accommodate a time close to your selection. Please complete one form per child, even if your children are in the same class. All Google Forms must be completed by Monday 2nd November 0800. You will then receive an email with the link to the Zoom Meeting and your approximate meeting time by Friday 6th November. For those classes with more than 30 children who are fully subscribed, teachers will contact you to arrange a suitable time.    As always, should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office. Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2020 - 2021. A warm welcome to everyone who has joined us this year and also to those familiar faces, families and friends. I can’t emphasise enough how lovely it is to see the children return to school full of joy and positivity. We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year thanks to the efforts of the team at Buckland St. Mary and my thanks to you as parents/carers for your understanding with some of our new procedures - which are working fantastically. As you are aware, Forest School is firmly in place and the children have had a fantastic time working with the Forest School team from ROAM. They have toasted marshmallows, built (and tested) dens and made beautiful leaf and medal designs. In addition, Premier Sports are providing quality PE sessions for the children as well as supporting groups at lunchtimes and throughout the school day. Classrooms have a real ‘buzz’ and are hives of activity. The range of tasks the children have taken part in has been fantastic and we’re underway with our Discovery work based on ‘Our Wonderful Village’. Classes have studied maps, navigated themselves around Buckland and drawn detailed studies of OS maps. Of course we’ve also learnt lots in maths and literacy; teachers and support staff are working hard to commence learning from Spring last year! As a father of two, I fully appreciate the logistics of staggered drop off and collection times, the reduction of After School Clubs and any concerns regarding the current situation. I understand the importance of supporting the children to adapt to these new routines and help them to feel safe and secure when things around them are slightly different than before. As a school, we are here to support you and your family as best we can. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I’ve received some lovely positive comments from parents/carers about all we’re doing in school which has been wonderful to hear so thank you. ‘Team Buckland’ have been invaluable in ensuring the start to 2020 - 2021 has been successful.Categories: 1 CategorySchool News
