The start of 2020 - 2021 at Buckland St. Mary C of E Primary School has been an incredibly successful one thanks to the unwavering support from every member of staff. Mrs K Henning and Mr A Kalopsideotis have not only settled brilliantly but are having a direct impact on the children’s progress thanks to their commitment and dedication to the children. Mr Kalopsideotis supported Beech Class with elevation drawings last week - we were blown away by the outcomes! Modern Foreign Language is evident in every class thanks to Mrs Hennings hard work and determination. Miss Katie Sulivan has seamlessly become part of the team and has ensured the children in EYFS have had such a positive start to their school career. Despite the obvious setbacks from last year, our revised approach to the national curriculum has taken off with pace. The teachers should feel very proud of what they’ve achieved in such a short time. We have a robust, experience based curriculum which every child who attends Buckland School benefits from. Miss Rogers (DCEO) and Mr Handscomb (Director of Teaching and Learning) were impressed with what they saw when they visited Buckland School last Wednesday. Well done to all the staff and of course the children - Buckland is going from strength to strength!  Forest School sessions have been superb. The team from ROAM have been working with the children each week and the smell of fire and toasted marshmallows is now a familiar one. Premier Sports continues to provide high quality PE provision for every child. Our Christian Vision is almost tangible across the school and is permeating everything we do. My thanks to the teachers, to Mrs Cann and all members of the team who continue to work tirelessly ensuring the very best for every child.  Finally, my thanks to Mr Heath-Coleman (Estates and Contract Manager) for securing the bid for and organising the installation of the new roof at Buckland School, I’m sure you’ll agree it looks fantastic!  Wishing you all an enjoyable half term.   Categories: 1 CategorySchool News
Parents' Evening Information Posted on: 23/10/2020

Parents' Evening Information

Dear parents/carers,    Due to Coronavirus restrictions, we will hold the forthcoming Parents’ Evening via Zoom. We would like to encourage everyone to book an appointment with their child’s/children’s teacher so that we have a chance to discuss how your child is progressing in school and how we can work together to do the very best for them. If it is difficult for you to join via Zoom for any reason, contact the school office for the attention of your child’s class teacher.    These meetings are a vital part of your child’s education and contribute towards their happiness at school and their progress in education. If you would also like to speak with Mr Nation (Executive Head of School) and/or Miss Counter (SENDCo), please contact the school office.    In keeping with our Risk Assessments and Home School Agreement, all sessions will be recorded and we ask you to ensure that if you choose to have your camera on, that the environment is suitable and non-offensive.    Below is a link to a Google Form. Please follow the corresponding link for your child’s class and complete the form. You must enter your child’s full name and choose 3 preferred time slots. We will do our best to accommodate a time close to your selection. Please complete one form per child, even if your children are in the same class. All Google Forms must be completed by Monday 2nd November 0800. You will then receive an email with the link to the Zoom Meeting and your approximate meeting time by Friday 6th November. For those classes with more than 30 children who are fully subscribed, teachers will contact you to arrange a suitable time.    As always, should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office. Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2020 - 2021. A warm welcome to everyone who has joined us this year and also to those familiar faces, families and friends. I can’t emphasise enough how lovely it is to see the children return to school full of joy and positivity. We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year thanks to the efforts of the team at Buckland St. Mary and my thanks to you as parents/carers for your understanding with some of our new procedures - which are working fantastically. As you are aware, Forest School is firmly in place and the children have had a fantastic time working with the Forest School team from ROAM. They have toasted marshmallows, built (and tested) dens and made beautiful leaf and medal designs. In addition, Premier Sports are providing quality PE sessions for the children as well as supporting groups at lunchtimes and throughout the school day. Classrooms have a real ‘buzz’ and are hives of activity. The range of tasks the children have taken part in has been fantastic and we’re underway with our Discovery work based on ‘Our Wonderful Village’. Classes have studied maps, navigated themselves around Buckland and drawn detailed studies of OS maps. Of course we’ve also learnt lots in maths and literacy; teachers and support staff are working hard to commence learning from Spring last year! As a father of two, I fully appreciate the logistics of staggered drop off and collection times, the reduction of After School Clubs and any concerns regarding the current situation. I understand the importance of supporting the children to adapt to these new routines and help them to feel safe and secure when things around them are slightly different than before. As a school, we are here to support you and your family as best we can. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I’ve received some lovely positive comments from parents/carers about all we’re doing in school which has been wonderful to hear so thank you. ‘Team Buckland’ have been invaluable in ensuring the start to 2020 - 2021 has been successful.Categories: 1 CategorySchool News

It’s been lovely to see the children return to school in high spirits and full of enthusiasm.  Classes have been busy working on their ‘Gateway’ Cracking Inventions. They’ve researched and designed various inventions based around the theme of ‘Space’ and have explored materials to make space helmets and rovers. It is lovely to see the children measuring accurately, sawing, glueing, sanding and just before Christmas - stitching! They have produced some beautiful work. In order to promote a greater sense of pride in our outcomes,  I would like to display some examples in school. To this end, we’d be most grateful if you could donate your child’s Christmas decoration for display. We would of course return it in readiness for next Christmas!  Last term we purchased some new ‘Discovery Books’ for Year 2 - 6 children who have begun adding excellent examples of their work. It is such a pleasure to see them willing to share their outcomes with staff. Reception and Year 1 children record their work in the class ‘Floor Book’. They too are always keen to share their learning. These will be available for you to look at during the next ‘Drop In’ session on 14th February 2020.  Our day trip to ‘We the Curious’ was a huge success. My thanks to Mrs Cann and Miss Auton for organising the trip and to all those who supported. The children’s behaviour was exemplary and they represented their school beautifully. Well done to all involved.  Miss Cridland very kindly organised for a GB athlete to come to our school. On Monday, Rich Parker (a British professional ‘vert’ skater) visited Buckland, led a circuits session with all the children and showed us his skills - by jumping over three members of staff! My thanks to Miss Cridland and Rich Parker for such a fantastic afternoon Finally, we have a wonderful opportunity for you to become an integral part of Buckland St. Mary C of E School. We’re seeking to increase the numbers of our (currently known as) ‘Ethos and Welfare Committee’. We meet regularly throughout the year and discuss the School’s priorities. If you’re interested, please get in touch via the school officeCategories: 1 CategorySchool News

I cannot believe how quickly this term has passed. It has been an incredibly busy and successful Autumn Term with much to celebrate.  I’d like to start with a huge thank you to parents, carers and loved ones for your continued support of our wonderful school. My thanks to Rev. Jim and Rev. Nick for their support at different events this year. Whether it was coming into school for Collective Worship sessions based on our values, supporting at community events or welcoming the children to church to ask questions based on their project, we’re grateful for their time and effort.  It was lovely to see so many of you at our ‘Vision Day’ last week. During the course of the day, the children had the opportunity to explore what the vision means to them, to locate it in the bible and to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. We had some wonderful comments from all who attended. Rev. Jim and Rev. Nick also joined us for the day and enjoyed taking part in supporting the children to understand the importance of our school vision. A special thank you to Rosey Thompson and Jane Carver who have painted our vision so beautifully in the school hall. Mrs Rundle and Miss Cridland planned the day and ensured everything went smoothly - well done team!  Thank you to all of the parents, carers, family members and friends who joined us for Carols at the Candlelight. I’m sure that you will agree that the children’s singing was amazing. A special mention must go to the soloists who were incredible! The children raised a fabulous £105 for CLIC, the school’s chosen charity this year, which is fantastic. An enormous thank you to the Boarder family, for kindly dressing the hall for Christmas lunch and donating, once again, the crackers and table clothes. It looked absolutely magical. Finally, my thanks to the Friends of Buckland St. Mary School (FoBS) who have begun fundraising again, helped with many events this term as well as providing the children with new ChromeBooks and many other extras for the children. Thank you especially for organising the pantomime. The newly interpreted retelling of Beauty and the Beast was fantastic. The children absolutely loved it and fully got in to the ‘he’s behind you’ spirit of panto! They were totally enthralled. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Enjoy spending time together as a family and cherish those dear to you.  Categories: 1 CategorySchool News

It’s amazing to think we’re three weeks into the second half of Autumn Term already. The children have returned full of energy and school is in full swing. We’ve started our new project for this half term and our ‘Gateway’ is ‘Cracking Ideas’. Following the session for parents last year, when we discussed Buckland St. Mary’s Curriculum, the school’s website has been updated. Under the ‘About Us’ tab you will find a ‘Curriculum’ tab. Please have a read of the document at the bottom of this page titled Curriculum Intent. Some of the pages are ‘under construction’ so watch this space for updates. My thanks to parents/carers for supporting the Shoe Box Appeal so well. We were able to send off many items that benefit those less fortunate than ourselves. In addition, we raised a fantastic ‘£104’ towards Children In Need. Raising the awareness of such charities and issues in the world is an integral part of what we do at Buckland St. Mary C of E School and clearly has a direct link to our Christian Values. It was lovely to see so many of you at Parents Evening last week. For those of you who didn’t manage to complete the survey, please scan the QR code on the back of this newsletter and answer the questions. On Wednesday 27th November, I will collate the responses and share with everyone before the end of term. Your feedback is valued and has already guided much of the work and efforts to date. For example, communication has been raised as an area for improvement. In light of this, we continue to send emails, letters etc. and all key dates are regularly updated on our school website as well as being added to all newsletters. In addition, and when necessary, we text/phone parents. All communication will aim to give parents/carers a minimum of two weeks notice. I appreciate that some things may have to change due to unforeseen circumstances but we endeavour to keep this to a minimum. If you feel this is not enough, please do get in touch so we can agree other forms of communication. Categories: 1 CategorySchool News
